Coders Recession Guide

Times are bad, lets be honest about it. Layoffs are happening all around us (see the TechCrunch Layoff Tracker) and coders (even great coders) are loosing their job. Whenever I hear about it, it always brings me back to the time I moved to London, with no Job and a Wife learning at the Cordon Blue (expensive tuition). Moving to a country where the currency is 8 times your previous local currency, and the living expenses are one of the highest in the world, with no Job to back you up, can be a bit frightening ;).

Personally, what I embarked at doing was getting myself as educated as I can about technology. While doing that, Compass was born as well. While working, many times we don’t have as much time as we want to stay updated with all the software changes occurring around us. The process of looking for a job is a great time for us to stay up to speed.

So, here are my suggestions for the (currently) unemployed coder:

Learn a New Language

I can’t emphasis how important this is. Learning a new software language expands a coders imagination and breaks him free from the constrain of just thinking in one language.

Some of the languages I would recommend include:

Learn and Read New Library/Framework

Now is the time to learn new libraries that you always wanted to learn but never had the time. When I was in London, it was time for me to learn Spring, Hibernate, and Lucene. I not only learned how to use them, but I also read their code. Great libraries have great coders behind them, and Open Source allows us to tap into their mind easily.

Some of my recommendations are (coming from Java background):

Of course there are many others, especially oldies like Spring, but the above list should keep you busy ;).

Read, Read, Read

Pick up a technology book of interest, or a business book that revolves around technology (we all want to start a startup one time, no?), and just read it. The list of books that I can recommend runs very long, and actually, it is quite hard to compile such a list, but I am sure that Amazon can help here, finding the book is not that difficult.

Just Read…

Wildfire

Its funny how the technology world is similar to a forest. Every once in a while, a wildfire is required for the forest to rejuvenate itself so it can survive. The same things happen now, really bad coders are being weeded out (a company “must” do some layoffs, just to be on the safe side, no?), and current coders gets a chance to upgrade themselves. But don’t worry, it will pass.
